Helical pile foundation for a wooden cabin in northern Finland
Case Study

Cabin Foundations in Northern Finland

Helical pile foundations driven overnight, in deep frost and arctic cold.

Ground frost over two metres deep. Temperatures well below -30 °C. Remote sites with limited access. Northern Finland is about as tough as foundation conditions get.

In this project, the foundations for two prefabricated cabins had to be ready on a tight schedule. Once the cabin delivery date was set, foundation work had to start without heavy site preparation to keep on track. Helical piling was clearly the smartest option.

The job came in during peak season and was fitted between other tasks: installation began on a summer evening and, with the long northern daylight, was finished overnight. The piles were screwed straight in, with no digging or soil replacement, and with no frost insulation or drainage needed.

After installation, the piles were cut to height and fitted with head plates, pre-drilled to fix the timber frame. There are centred and offset versions; in the offset type the collar tube is welded slightly to the side, letting the plate rotate on the pile head to fine-tune small alignment differences.
