Strengthening the Brandoa Health Centre foundations with helical piles, Amadora
Case Study

Brandoa Health Centre

Strengthening an existing building's foundations with helical piles installed in 1-metre sections, under a tight height restriction.

In 2022, Rotopile strengthened the foundations of the Brandoa Health Centre building, in Alfornelos, Amadora, with 17 helical piles.

The biggest challenge was space. The piles had to be driven beneath the existing structure, under a tight height restriction, with narrow access and little room to manoeuvre.

1-metre tube sections used to install the piles beneath the structure

To work around the lack of headroom, the piles were installed in 1-metre tube sections, joined as the pile went down. This made it possible to install 6-metre piles within the available space, without needing the headroom for a full-length tube.

In all, 17 helical piles were installed, in Ø114.3 × 9.0 mm tube with a Ø400 mm helix, passing through the made ground and transferring the building's loads to firmer soil. Turned in by rotation, with no excavation and no concrete, the strengthening was done with minimal disturbance and with the building in use.
